About Tailscale
Tailscale is building the new Internet by delivering software that makes it easy to securely interconnect people and their devices, no matter where they are. From hobbyists and start-ups to medium and large companies, teams around the world use Tailscale to solve problems in hardware and software security within their organization, remote access to internal services, and most recently work from anywhere solutions covering integration and access to external and internal resources.
Tailscale values curiosity, continuous learning, transparency, and respect in our community. We are forever building towards our vision of a safe, efficient, and flexible network that accelerates our people and our customers.
About the role
Tailscale is looking for a detail-oriented and motivated Analytics Engineer to join our growing Data Team. You will help us improve data quality across the board, contribute to faster data delivery, and help teams across Tailscale answer their own questions. You will work across data ingestion, transformation, storage, analysis, visualization, and self-serve data exposure.
This role focuses on collaborating with business stakeholders, especially within Go-To-Market, Product and Engineering, to help them understand their data. It calls for proactive engagement, ownership of data outcomes, and a commitment to enabling data self-service for teams across Tailscale. Because we are an early-stage and fully remote company, we are looking for a self-starter who can work autonomously to plan and own their work.
Key responsibilities
• Partner with the Data Team and stakeholders across the company to understand the data questions they need answered and propose suitable data solutions.
• Build and maintain self-serve data models and dashboards in Looker and BigQuery that surface trustworthy, timely data.
• Partner with cross-functional stakeholders to define, document, and standardize key business metrics.
• Improve data quality, testing, and automation so reporting is accurate, timely, and reproducible.
• Identify repetitive data requests and convert them into reusable datasets, dashboards, or automations.
• Support data governance: documentation, metric definitions, and best practices for how teams use data.
• Help maintain and evolve our data stack and workflows, including dbt, Fivetran, BigQuery, Looker, Hex or related tools.
• Troubleshoot data discrepancies in partnership with the Data Platform team and build confidence in the underlying data.
• Create a culture of self-service by enabling others to use data tools and understand the data.
Ideally, you have
• Experience as an analytics engineer, data analyst, business intelligence engineer, or in a similar role building analytics in a modern data stack.
• Strong SQL skills and experience with data modeling concepts such as star schemas, dimensional modeling, and semantic or metrics layers.
• Experience with dbt and data transformation workflows.
• Experience creating dashboards and explores with business intelligence tools including Looker and its semantic layer, or Tableau or Power BI.
• Experience with data warehouses or lakes including BigQuery, Snowflake or Redshift.
• Comfort working with business stakeholders to gather requirements and translate them into data products.
• A detail-oriented mindset: you care about data quality, tests, and documentation.
• Clear communication skills and a desire to enable others through self-service data.
What we offer
• An inclusive and flexible environment, and a competitive total compensation package including base salary and equity.
• Comprehensive health coverage with Tailscale covering a large portion of premiums, and support in setting up your remote work space.
• Work from anywhere with asynchronous collaboration, a company offsite at least once a year, and strong support for working parents.
• Decide your own course of action, and generous paid time off including at least three weeks of vacation plus personal and sick days.
Compensation
US pay range: $135,000 – $169,000.
Tailscale is committed to maintaining a transparent compensation philosophy, and job level and actual salary will be decided based on factors including but not limited to individual work performance, years of experience, and expected conduct. Salary is based on many factors and it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role. Pay may be adjusted in line with market factors, subject to Tailscale’s internal salary framework.
Tailscale is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees, with intentional efforts to create a workplace where people feel supported and valued. Accommodations are available on request throughout the selection process.
