An overview of this role
Backend Engineer on the Change Record team in the Source Code stage. You will build a trustworthy record of every change as AI agents write code, working in Ruby on Rails on a critical system serving GitLab.com, self-managed, and Dedicated instances, remotely from the UK or Poland.
What you will do
• Develop secure, well-tested, performant features with Ruby on Rails and GraphQL
• Handle complex requirements and legacy constraints while protecting reliability
• Design and maintain backend services, APIs, data models, and business logic
• Collaborate cross-functionally, async and sync
• Use AI agents for well-scoped work and critically review their output
• Write maintainable code and participate in code reviews
• Support reliability: production health metrics, Tier 2 on-call, incidents, root cause analysis, and observability
• Share knowledge through review, documentation, and collaboration
What you will bring
• Professional experience building backend web applications, services, and APIs with Ruby and GraphQL
• Relational databases, SQL, data modeling, caching, background processing, and backend performance
• Full-stack experience for user-facing workflows
• Backend unit and integration tests, testing pyramid, Git, and collaborative review
• Clear written and spoken English; remote async updates
• Ability to manage priorities, ambiguity, and ownership
• Experience with AI coding agents, with critical review of their output
• Bonus: built production agent or agent-based workflows
About the team
The team spans Europe and North America with 4 engineers (backend and frontend), working closely with other Source Code teams, Agentic Preview, and Repository Services.
