Senior Electrical Characterisation Engineer

About The Role and Team Quantum Motion is a fast-growing quantum computing scale-up based in London founded by internationally renowned researchers from UCL and Oxford University with over 40 years’ experience in developing qubits and quantum computing architectures. Bringing together state-of-the-art cryogenic facilities and an outstanding interdisciplinary team, we are developing quantum processors based on industrial-grade silicon chips, with the potential to radically transform computing power in areas such as materials modelling, medicine, artificial intelligence and more.

Our Team
Since 2021 our team has been listed every year in the “Top 100 Startups worth watching” in the EE Times in 2021 and 2022, and our technology breakthroughs have been featured in The Telegraph , BBC and the New Statesman . Our founders are internationally renowned researchers from UCL and Oxford University who have pioneered the development of qubits and quantum computing architectures. Our chairman is the co-founder of Cadence and Synopsys, the two leading companies in the area of Electronic Design Automation. We’re backed by a team of top-tier investors, and we have recently closed our Series C funding of $160 million.

We bring together the brightest quantum engineers, integrated circuit (IC) engineers, quantum computing theoreticians and software engineers to create a unique, world-leading team, working together closely to maximise our combined expertise. Our collaborative and interdisciplinary culture is an ideal fit for anyone who thrives in a cutting-edge research and development environment focused on tackling big challenges and contributing to the development of scalable quantum computers based on silicon technology.

This is a rare and exciting opportunity to be an employee at a scale-up shaping the future of quantum computing. There are vast opportunities for professional growth and to make an impact within the company.
Our team of 100+ is based across London, Oxford, San Sebastián and Sydney, with our primary hub in Islington (London).
We are looking for a Senior Electrical Characterisation Engineer to join our Process Integration team and play a key role in understanding, qualifying and improving the silicon devices at the heart of our quantum processors.
You will sit at a fascinating intersection between semiconductor manufacturing and quantum hardware, working closely with foundries, process engineers and quantum engineers.
You will use electrical characterisation and large-scale data analysis to understand manufacturing variability, identify the root causes of device behaviour, and feed those insights directly back into the semiconductor fabrication process.
This is an opportunity to have a tangible impact on the yield, quality and scalability of quantum processors, working with some of the most advanced silicon technology being developed for quantum computing.

Functions of the Role
• Drive electrical characterisation of fabricated silicon devices , developing and continuously improving high-throughput screening methods to assess key device parameters including threshold voltage, gate oxide reliability and channel mobility.

• Turn electrical data into manufacturing insight , identifying patterns, variability and device failures and connecting them back to semiconductor process steps such as photolithography, etching, oxide growth, CMP and doping.

• Develop automated measurement and test infrastructure , creating robust Python-based test routines and instrument-control workflows across room-temperature and, where appropriate, low-temperature wafer probing environments.

• Analyse large-scale electrical datasets using statistical process control, yield analysis and other data-driven techniques to monitor wafer uniformity, defect density and process drift.

• Work directly with semiconductor foundries and process engineers , providing clear, actionable feedback that can be used to improve device performance, consistency and yield.

• Build scalable characterisation processes , establishing testing standards, calibration procedures, SOPs and data pipelines that allow information to flow effectively between semiconductor process integration and quantum engineering teams.

• Help shape how we characterise the next generation of our technology , bringing your expertise and ideas to continuously improve our measurement capability as Quantum Motion scales.

• We are looking for someone who combines strong semiconductor device knowledge with a practical, data-driven approach to electrical characterisation.

Experience - Essentials

• Master's or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Microelectronics, Semiconductor Physics, Materials Science or a closely related discipline.

• 3+ years' experience in semiconductor device testing, reliability engineering, electrical characterisation or yield analysis within a foundry, IDM or semiconductor R&D environment.

• Strong understanding of silicon CMOS fabrication processes, semiconductor device physics and foundry workflows.

• Hands-on experience with semiconductor parameter analysers, SMUs and wafer probe stations, including DC and/or RF electrical testing.

• Strong Python skills, particularly for instrument control, automation and automated test execution.

• A highly analytical approach and the ability to work with large datasets to identify trends, anomalies and root causes.

• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across semiconductor, process, hardware and quantum engineering teams.

Experience - Desirable It would be particularly valuable if you also have experience in:

• Quantum device physics, including quantum dots, single-electron transistors (SETs) or charge-stability mapping.…
